The case with Jon is just the opposite — he always makes it a point to personally talk to his people in a more intimate setting and really listen to them and understand them; he doesn’t like to give orders, he likes to make people understand why they must do something. Think of when Jon tries to convince the wildlings to fight the Boltons. And then think of how Dany tries to convince the Lannister/Tarly soldiers to fight for her. Opposite ends of the spectrum. That is why Jon is followed out of love, and Dany out of fear. And it takes this houseparty for Dany to realise this. This situation also makes an important point to Dany — she is an outsider. Everyone else in the room is a Northerner or at least a Westerosi. Dany is not. She has come to claim her birthright but what’s the point of the birthright if those people themselves don’t feel she belongs? She puts herself on a pedestal and likes to keep things that way. In the process, she has managed to also alienate herself from the people. As a result of all this, she finds herself feeling very lonely. Even in celebration, she cannot find joy because no one loves her. They only love her for her firepower. Not for her personality. And she kind of senses that. And it goes right against her own code of wanting to be loved by her people. This internal conflict makes her very uncomfortable, and she wonders what she must do to be loved like Jon is loved by his people. And she still isn’t able to understand, and that disturbs her. The German Empire, with the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II, was left as a fragile rump republic. France reclaimed Alsace-Lorraine and occupied the Ruhr Valley, the heart of German industry. Poland was reconstituted out of former German and Russian territory leaving East Prussia cut off from Germany. All of this was essentially dictated by the United Kingdom and France. All that said, the United Kingdom and France, especially, paid a terrible price in blood and treasure for the outcome. However, calling it a pyrrhic victory would be erroneous because that would imply that the British Empire was ripe for conquest which was absolutely not the case. The years following the end of WWI did see the British Empire begin to relinquish some of the world stage. With the signing of the Washington Treaty in 1922 the UK accepted naval parity with the United States after nearly two centuries of unparalleled naval dominance, cementing the U.S. as a world power in its own right. The British Empire would grapple with internal issues like the recognition of Ireland to the burgeoning independence movement in India and the onset of a world wide financial depression and the rise of fascism and communism setting the stage for WWII. This is the event that truly redefined the British Empire and what could, mistakenly, be taken for a pyrrhic victory. When she came out of that conflict she had changed. Empire gave way to Commonwealth. The decades following WWII weren’t easy for the UK. She had borrowed heavily to finance the war and had to pay that back. She also had a population that endured and prevailed in two global wars. They wanted something in return. They got it in the form of the NHS and stronger social services. Despite that the UK never disengaged from world politics. She is a founding member of the United Nations and one of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. The UK is also one of the largest economies in the world so, Brexit aside, I’d say she has done very well since then.
