One afternoon, while Melissa was holding my daughter in the pool, the Know-It-All swam over and tried to grab my baby out of her arms. Melissa’s mom heard them arguing and started walking over to break it up. She saw the Know-it-All yank my daughter away with so much force that the baby’s head hit the side of the pool and she stopped breathing. Melissa and her mom immediately began rescue-breathing, while somebody else called 9-1-1. By the time the EMTs arrived, my daughter was breathing again. The EMTs checked her over and the police took statements and filed a report. The police officer looked for the girl who had caused my daughter’s injury, but she had disappeared. When I got home that day and heard what happened, I couldn’t thank Melissa and her mom enough for what they did, and I couldn’t hug my baby tightly enough. I was not upset with the sitter; as far as I was concerned, Melissa and her mom were heroes. Melissa continued to sit for me until the end of the summer when she was due to join the Air Force. A few months later, I heard that Melissa had tracked down the Know-It-All and beat the crap out of her before leaving the next day for boot camp.
